Karen Hirt gave generously of her time and talents to the Buckeye community. She was a member of the Buckeye Board of Education for 16 years and a member of the Medina Career Center board for many years. As a parent and board member, she actively participated in various school events over the years. Throughout her life Karen was a Scout advisor for both boys and girls and was a founding member of the Welcome Wagon of Valley City (Women’s Club), as well as a charter member of the Valley City Historical Society. She also was a member of Emmanuel United Church of Christ in Valley City. In her professional life she worked in the family business, Hirt’s Greenhouse in Strongsville, as a floral designer and participated in a question and answer program on the radio dealing with horticulture. In addition, Karen was a frequent speaker at the Valley City Garden Club. The Karen Hirt Memorial Scholarship will be awarded in 2015 to a Buckeye student or students who have been enrolled in either the horticulture or agriculture programs at Buckeye or the Medina Career Center. The scholarship will be based on a 300-word essay explaining the reasons for entering either area, as well as a written recommendation from a teacher or other person in the field. A panel of former Buckeye board members and family will make the selection. If members of the community would like to honor Karen Hirt, they may send their donations for the scholarship to the Buckeye Board office at 3044 Columbia Rd., Medina, OH 44256 ATTN: treasurer’s office.
